What would you expect from a movie that explores the secret plot of cats to take over the world and rule us all as their slaves (how, exactly is this different than the way we are now?) and the secret dog society that has been formed to save us all?  I think i would have expected more than i got.  I am reasonably sure that they could have made this movie such that the humour wasn't quite so childish.

Oh wait, it was a children's movie.  I guess i have just been spoiled by the likes of looney tunes and other such shows that realize that there are likely going to be adults who see these movies.  People who understand that we want to enjoy the movie as well.  As it was this movie started, continued and remained childish from start to finish.  The jokes simple enough that a dog could understand them.

Still the effects in this movie were pretty good, the plot line was moderately ok and the animals were for the most part cute.  Although when i think about it, i wonder why it was that they took each and every opportunity to make the dogs look cute and yet the cats constantly looked evil.  Strange.  I guess it makes sense, you must have the evil creatures come across as evil for the kiddies to get it.

In the end, weak story, weak jokes, weak movie.  But it will amuse the younger and the animal lovers.  I have given it a tepid

I was unsure what to give this movie because i figure that about 90% of you would never ever want to see it or be capable of enjoying it if you did.  I mean, come one, a number of young half starved dancers join the American Ballet Association and we get to see them train through their first season.  Do we honestly want to see if they are going to make it through the big performance at the end to get a permanent position with a dance company?  A movie in which the main focus is ballet in every way?  You know, a movie where everything is about the strength of human spirit and young women finding themselves in spite of what it is that they are expected to become by their parents and people around them?

And then i realized that it didn't matter how much i didn't think you were going to like it, that doesn't matter.  What does matter is the performance of the people in the movie, the way the move was written, directed, danced and etc.  And all these things were done rather well. I liked pretty much all the characters for what they did, and although i don't really know from the technical of dancing, they pretty much impressed the shit out of me.

The story. Well....it was a little predictable, it was a little simple, but it was, as advertised, cute and heart-warming and special.  I pretty much melted for this movie and loved it for the way it made me feel.  You might too.  Who knows.

So, i guess what i am going to say is that if you can read what i have just written and still seem interested in this movie, then by all means, go and see it, for it is good.  I have given it a half-limpid.

Tremendous.  Can you believe that they could make me love a chicken.  And not just any old chicken, but one made of clay?  I hadn't thought this possible, i mean i still remember loving Gonzo but not minding at all when someone mistreated his many girlfriends the Chickens.  This movie was a charmer filled with references from some of the best prison movies around.  Would you be willing to believe that a piece of clay would be able to capture the same attitude and irreverent charm as Steve McQueen from The Great Escape?  Well they did it.

So this movie is simple.  It is a chicken farm.  The chickens think of it as a prison, go figure, and want out.   They are organizing and want to escape en mass.  They have to do it before the evil farmers can complete their sadistic plans to make the chickens into chicken pot pies with a pie machine machine.  Rocky is a flying rooster that flies into the pen to help.

Is this movie done well?  Without doubt.  It is exceptionally well done.  Masterful and wonderful.  I laughed so much at so many things.  Witty, clever and fun.  Is it only for children.  Not at all, while kids will love this film it has more than enough humour aimed at a mature sense of humour to make it fun for everyone.

I loved this film and would recommend it to anyone.  I give it a half-limpid.

Hmmmm. I don't know for sure if i do know now exactly what it is that i like and don't like about this movie.  It was pleasant and there was certainly a lot to enjoy about it.  I guess one of the problems i had were the preconceptions that i was forced to go into this movie with.  You see, some executive somewhere decided that it would be very good for the sales of tickets for this movie if it won some awards.  Hell, i am even willing to believe that if they had been madly in love with Juliette that they might have believed this.  But the unfortunate thing is i don't really think that this movie was award worthy.  So here i go in, thinking that it was an amazing piece of work that was going to leave me stunned and wondrous.
This just didn't happen.  Not even remotely.  It was enjoyable, i shall grant you this but it wasn't more, really than a nice distraction and huge ball of fluff.  Issues...yeah, i guess they skirt some issues in it but they make them cuter than is reasonably for race and religious fervour.  I felt like they were just saying to me over and over again, why can't we just get along.
However there is one thing that it has, in levels and layers of distraction that will drive you to drool.  That will leave you aching in your seat needing chocolate.  Don't think for a second that you can just pick up a box of glossettes at the door and just eat them.  Cause this would be the silliest thing you could so.  For the display of chocolate in this movie is nothing short of glorious.  i don't even like chocolate very much and i was hoping they would come around with some samples.  If you were let your cravings build while watching the movie and then take a glossette hoping it will satisfy your craving...well you are in a world of disappointment.
There was some high calibre talent in this movie and they act to the level.  They do.  The child actors in it were great.  Judi Dench...well she plays old and crotchety like she is old and crotchety.  Juliette who is somewhat past the age of beautiful starlet plays the mysterious strange to the height of sensuality.

So yes, this movie is worth seeing, i guess, but don't go expecting a revelation from a chocolate movie.  I have given it a half-limpid.

I'm sorry, did you expect this movie to be a literary masterpiece?  This is what i asked myself as i walked out.  Confused.  I was confused because a full 2/3 of this movie just sucked.  And then there was that other third, the third where women were kicking male ass and dancing on the bar.  For you see, that part of the movie was so much fun.  And the rest, was just awful.

I think there was a story there, but it was so painfully written, so predictably heart murmuring, so icky and plicky that i tried as hard as i could to ignore it.  In fact, the time in between the bar scenes was spent with me being pulled down into a world of morose by the story and dialogue until it could be made to fly again by the next bar scene.  This doesn't for a good movie make.  The lines that they made poor John Goodman speak almost made me want to cry out, 'go back to TV, where you have some control.'  And thankfully, he is.

In the end, was my enjoyment of this movie just about sexy women dancing on a bar?  No, not precisely, i think that anyone could have fun seeing these strong women control the crowd of men in they way that they did, not necessarily using sex, but using their knowledge of the power they hold over men when they want it.  And the glee you could see in this, was grand.  And ok, i confess, there was some joy in the sexy women, although, it was the sweet and pure Piper that did it most for me.  She well go far i think, if you want to base such things on my hormones.

I have given this movie a vapid, mostly because it sucked.  But you know, if you go into it with the right attitude and waiting for the fun parts and being willing to cat call at the bad ones, then you just might enjoy it.  Because i walked out of it, having had fun.

Old men, old men, old men, everywhere those old men.  What is it about Hollywood and the movies with the old men in them.  Don't answer that, it is rhetorical.  Because i know the answer, there is no reason that we shouldn't have movies with old men in them.  Old men are a part of the world just as much as young people are.  And when you think about it, if you can make the old men, men that we recognize and love then we are that much more likely to like the movie.

I went to this movie not expecting too much, i mean you are really setting yourself up if you are expecting too much from Burt Reynolds and Richard Dreyfus movie aren't you?  And i was pleasantly surprised.  This movie was cute and witty and most of all funny.  They didn't harp over and over again with the old jokes and the ones that they did include were new and fresh (so to speak).  The story, was novel, if not competely new and creative.  Yeah, i laughed a fair amount and left the movie thinking that i had had a good time.

Of course it was still a little mindless and the humour was a little low rather than intelligent and they did lean a little too much on the age as a cruch for carrying things when they needed to.  This is another one you can take your grandpa to and you will both enjoy it and he won't go on and on about the state the world is getting into these days.  Also kudos to Mr. Reynolds for making him like him once again in a movie, an adorable violent thug he was.

I have given this movie a tepid because even with the fact that i enjoyed it out there, i mean it was a shallow silly comedy.  But if you want a light laugh and a no-brainer, check it out, it will amuse you.

Also known as Wu hu zang long this movie takes us into a new realm of martial arts.  This isn't a Karate movie (of course it isn't, it's not karate) it isn't an adventure movie and it isn't a love story.  It is a combination of all these things in a way that i don't think that i have seen before in a movie.  They actually wrote a story that fits into the time period, with subtleties and nuances.  Who knew that they could do that.  This doesn't even encounter the idea that they did it in China for only 12 million dollars.

This movie is filled with some of the most amazing physical effects that i have ever seen.  I mean, sure the running up the tree has a sort of surreal feeling that makes you kind of want to snicker but if you step back in your mind and think about what it would take to get someone up on the tip top of a tree like that, and then have them fight a sword and martial arts battle.  And sure those things were aided with special effects, but the lighting fast fighting that happened on the ground it was done real time without aids. How's that for cool?

Add to this a story that makes sense, that flows and has you buying into characters.  That makes you care and want to win.  This movie had it all.  Story, fighting, characters....everything.  Chow Yun-Fat, who i am told learned martial arts for this film played the entire master.  Wise and skilled he managed to thwart every move made against him with practiced ease.  When you looked at him you knew he was wise.  And yet they still managed to show that he was kind of silly in the ways of the world and what love meant to him.  Michelle Yeoh was obviously incredibly talented and also world wise but seemingly in an entirely different way than he.  And the young martial artist needing guidance, i don't think she could have done a better job of wanting us to put us over our knee and give her the spanking she deserved.  Unless of course it was for the fact that she could kick our ass.

This movie had great and strong characters, both male and female that knew what they were doing and why they were doing it.  They evil character of the Fox, you knew she was evil and every fibre of her being was rife with moral turpitude.

I liked this movie, no, i loved this movie, i have given it a half-turgid.

This movie was one that i felt held a lot of promise. Perhaps i made the mistake in believing some of the hype.  And trust me there was a lot of hype.  To start there was the oddly subversive campaign that started slowly, with just posters that really didn't do much but tease at the beginning of this year.  Then there was the huge web presence of ads and a quite elaborate website.  Then came the hugely pervasive ad campaign.  I'm not usually one to fall for an ad campaign.  But this was different, it had promise.  This movie had so much promise.  The premise was intelligent, new and exciting.
Before it ever came out i was looking forward to it.  A spoof and a satire about the stuffed children's character industry.  One in which the character gets killed.  What's to hate?  And Robin Williams playing a disenfranchised, psychotic star, how could that possibly be bad?  So everything was pointing towards this being a film i was going to enjoy. Then the movie came out and all the reviews panned it.  I wondered...i pondered...maybe it just wasn't accessible to the movie going public.  My hopes though, they weren't very strong.
I must say that i don't think that the problem with this film is the acting, i felt that it was very well done.  Edward Norton was a marvel.  And Catherine Keener made me fall in love with her once again.  I don't even necessarily think it was the writing, i think that this film was written ok.  But there was something, something about the way it was put together, something about the direction, the editing, just something.  Something made this film fall far from the mark.
The infuriating part too was that you could keep seeing the potential and each time you would know that the film was going to fall short of what it could be. For example there were a number of children's songs in this film and they did choose lyrics that were kind of amusing but they didn't make songs that were catchy and fun.  I mean if there is one bit of truth about children's programming, it's that the music is catchy and fun.  So instead of it leaving me amused by the lyrics it left me wondering how they could expect me to believe that this was even remotely what they were trying to say it was.

I smiled a few times while i was watching this movie it is true but after 2 hours of continually missing my expectations and making me wonder why they had made it in this way i am afraid i can't give this film much beyond a half-tepid.

I wasn't sure about this movie before i went to it, but when a friend offered to go with me on an extended lunch hour i was more than happy enough to go. I was wondering how much i was going to hate it. I don't like Disney animation, i think that Disney animation is evil.  They twist stories, change the intent, mangle history and produce hopeless twaddle, for the most part.  But i have been impressed with their computer generated animation so i was willing to give it a chance.

Before i can even talk about the story or anything else, this movie was incredible in its graphics and imagery.  The dinosaurs were huge and moved with something very akin to reality.  Better than any human i have ever seen.  I would have to say that the actual animation in this film could make it a masterpiece and totally makes it worth watching. The wrinkles that you see in that eye to the left actually move in the movie, they actually move.

Now, the story and stuff.  Well the voices do a good job, but honestly, i don't know if i can think of an example of a full release animated picture where they weren't fine.  The story....was...believable i guess, within the bounds of suspended belief, but there was just something missing for me.  I guess i just didn't get to know the characters well enough, or something like that. So, that took away for me, it all just seemed a lot superficial.  I guess this is what took it down to tepid for me.

Kudos to disney though, these are dinosaurs, they are somewhat harder than most traditional Disney characters.  We even get to see a little death.

I have chosen to give this movie a tepid.   I think that for kids, it would get a much higher and for the very serious minded adult lower.  But all around i liked it.

I sat through this movie...all the way to the end.  You see, sometimes even the brightest of people make errors in judgement.  You must remember not to expect much when a movie you think is going to be crappy starts itself with some very expensive looking and yet entirely lame and ugly opening credits.  I think i drifted off during them.  These are still to this moment the high part of the movie to me.  There weren't even any low points in the movie for me.  For they are all subterranean.  No, they are swiftly tunnelling towards the middle of the earth because this movie has just enough pride to be ashamed of showing its face close to the surface as the subterranean depths.
This movie started slow and stayed that way, using sight gag after sight gag to intersperse between the lame word gags.  I am still not sure what they were trying to get at, you know, should we just laugh because these two stoners who never once mention drugs were stoners?  I don't think so.  How about the big breasted aliens?  Is that funny?  No, not that either.  How about the gay Swedes?  Nope not them.  The ostriches?  Nope not them either...shall i keep listing them?  Cause they did in fact keep trying.
They were almost endless.  In fact i think this movie, which was under an hour and a half seemed to be about 2 and a half hours to me. Would you believe that the funniest part might actually be the part in the commercials where they shout at each others backs?  Ok, it wasn't but it could almost have been.  How about any movie that uses a star calibre cameo to make things more interesting and then uses Fabio?
Yeah, you're getting my point.  The story is supposedly them finding out what they had done in their night before.  There are so many gaping holes in it that they car could be parked in any number of them.  Acting...sorry, absent, intersting, sorry absent, characters, sorry absent.
I know what you are thinking....you expected these things?  And no i didn't but i did expect to laugh at least once instead.
   Nope.  Not even once.
The only good thing about this movie...i am happy to say that i have now given my second fetid rating.

This movie had myself and the rest of the audience howling.  For most of the film.  Because it is funny.  Even though the story is enough to make you angry, it doens't really, it just makes you want to smile.

This a British film set in the 70's.  It surrounds the events of a mixed Pakistani and British family as the older sons are going to be set up in a fixed marriage.  Everything about this film is a set up for us to laugh about some cultural inconsistency of the times.

Om Puri is just amazing in his role as the hard line Pakistani father.  You have no choice but to pity him and hate him.  After his role as the lovable taxi driver in My Son the Fanatic i thought that he could only be lovable, but this was certainly not the case.  He rocked.

Go and see this film, you will be rolling in the sticky isles.  I give it a limpid.

I loved this movie.  It had everything that  i love in a movie.  It had a story that was filled with tension, plot, characterization and brilliance.  Set in 1947 in the Ukraine it is the story of a Russian man who is repatriated when the Russians allowed people back into the movie after the war.  With him comes his wife and child.  They are French.  The Russian Gov't had declared that all repatriates would be welcome and that the french wife would be as well.  This was not exactly the case.

Instead they wandered into hell.  Every person from the west was by definition a spy and a person from France had no rights at all.

So...the stupidity.  Well...the woman... the French wife had no perception of reality and seemed to do everything she could to make things difficult. i mean how bright is it to stand in front of people who willingly and happily shoot anyone who causes them the slightest bit of consternation and tell they don't know who to run a country.  and to do it in the face of your husband who tries to explain...constantly.  Although, i think that many would call her courageous.  I think those people are silly.

But aside from that it is still a superb movie.  I mean, she was probably a stupid woman in real life so it was an accurate depiction.

It is a sweeping movie that teaches you as much about history as it does about people.  I love it, every minute.  It is in Russian and French language and subtitled in English if that means anything to you.  But go and see it, i give it a limpid.

Disney and i don't get along as a general rule.  There are many reasons for this  but it is a good, hard and fast general rule that i have come to believe.  Most of this would be because i consider the way that they candy up and dumb down stories to be rather destructive to both the intent and desire of the story and author as well as dumbing down and candying up children.  So, now that i have said that and perhaps built this movie up to the point where you would say automatically that i am not going to like it, i liked it. Ha.

Why though, why did i like it?  First of, i didn't find this movie to be dumbed down nor candied up.  No one did anything just because of true love.  Someone did something soley for the search for power. You know, sort of real things.  There was interpersonal conflict, there was strife, there was a person overcoming their grand ego to become a real person with actual respect for themselves.  And, just before you start thinking, oh great a PBS cartoon, this was all very much deftly hidden behind a mask of lamas that talk, dance and infuriate, squirrels with an attitude and puma's with selective hearing.  And wit, beyond all else this is, in my opinion, the first Disney movie that has tried to carry a train of wit throughout it all, beginning to end.  And in this it succeeded.  It was witty and funny, the jokes were intelligent and had enough depth to make you laugh with something other than just your lips.

Add all of these things together with the dynamic energy that this film had and you get something that is just fun to sit there and watch.  I laughed a lot, and meant it.  I began to care a little bit about the characters.  And as opposed to traditional Disney fare, i wasn't being forced to care because the characters were bunny rabbit cute, or cried all the time, or were downtrodden.  You know how it is.

In the end i would recommend this movie for anyone who is remotely interested in the idea of Disney with brains.  Or just a wandering romp.  On the other hand, don't expect it to make you think, they lessons it has within it are really things you already knew and it is just going to add its lesson to the heap in your subconscious.  I have given it a half-limpid.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie before i went to it.  I had seen a trailer for it but hadn't heard much.  The trailer had made it look like a terribly glamorous suspense piece in which i would find love and a hero.  Where i would see one man winning a battle against the Germans with just his rifle.  Then what i saw as, ummm, one man....fighting a war against the Germans. I didn't see anyone winning anything.

War is supposed to be depressing right?  No one is really a hero right?  Well, this movie will not only demonstrate that, it will also show you all the things that were bad about being Russian.  Downright awful.

So i guess you might want to know about the actual movie.  It is not bad.   I think that the acting was done quite passably.  Although i don't think you at any point get to know the character that Ed Harris plays, or any of them really.  You sort of get to know the parts that are already obvious by the situation.  So the simple farm boy gets a little put off by the deaths of his friends, whoa, that makes sense.  So, yes, the acting is done well enough but the characters are very shallow and somehow not believable enough to make us really care.

The story, is just too damn long, i am sure they could have done this shorter and actually held some suspense and action to be a part of it.  As it was this action, war, film managed to move slowly and not always hold my attention.  tepid

This movie should make you want to go and trounce big business.  Because after you see it you will know that you can grab it by the balls and bring it to it's knees.  Oh, did i give it away?  Nah, who would have any doubt that you could go into an empowerment movie like this and not come out with at least a happy-ish ending?

So, basically, Julia Roberts plays the title character a no nonsense strong as nails single mom who has absolutely no resume saleable skills.  She manages to take this and her willpower to get herself a job that she can transform into a struggle against big business for the little guy.

Surprise me, she does a good and believable job.  This may be the first movie that i have seen Julia Roberts in where i didn't think, 'I wonder if Pamela Anderson couldn't do the same job.'  She does a good job.  And the movie has an interesting story that keeps you watching and wanting.  How will they take down the big business, how will the single mom with no law training take them down in a courtroom.

As for being feminist and empowering?  Well, it might very well be both of these, because it is about a woman who takes on a job in order to feed her family. And she does a good job, with some realism for an enjoyable performance.

Then again, there is nothing exceptionally wonderful about it.  So, i enjoyed it, and give it a tepid.

This movie was supposed to be an action flick, it was supposed to be filled with such cool car chase and racing scenes that you would be left breathing hard and gasping for more.   There was to be such passion and feeling suffusing the entire film to the point that you grimaced and grinned your way to the end.  Would you believe that it completely failed on each and every point?  It did, it managed to fail on all of these points.

It's really quite an impressive achievement you might assume.  It is true that i didn't go into this movie expecting it to be good, but i must admit that i went into it expecting to enjoy the racing scenes. I, like many, am rather fond of a good car chase or a good car race.  However, the races in this movie were flat and empty.  Granted there was some impressive driving from time to time but they rarely focussed upon that, instead deciding that all you need to do to show speed is make everything blurry and just keep the cameras on the faces of the actors.  In short the entire reason for going to this movie in the first place fell far short of the goal.

My second hope and dream for this movie was that it would have a good story. I mean, consider you have street racers, racing robbers, an undercover cop, an ex-con and a love story with his sister, with all of these elements put together it seems unreasonable that you couldn't put them together into a plot that had a flow and interlocking nature that actually made it a pleasure to see.  But no, it was disjointed and boring.  Not all of the plot points seemed to relate to the same story.

The actors didn't seem to do a bad job and Vin Diesel, in spite of his silly name, on and off screen managed to be completely sexy at all times.  However, this was totally ruined by the fact that their lines sucked, their character development lacked, shall we say the developmental parts and their lines lacked any sort of humanity or interest.

In short, there doesn't really seem to be that much in the way of a reason to see this film.  I mean, if you are a car buff, and love to see suped up Honda Civics, go see it with my blessing, but don't expect a good movie. I have given it a half-tepid.

What do you expect to see when you go to see an adult targeted animated feature?  Well, these days you obviously expect to see some pretty fabulous animation.  And this movie, done entirely by computer has that, it has that in spades.  There was so much about this film that was just incredible.  We can start with Aki, the main character.

Ok, ok, right off i am going to say that she was a very attractive animated character, yes i found her cute.  But she was done with some of the most amazing technique that i have had the pleasure to see. Great strides forward have been made with this movie.  I have heard that 60 million separate strands of hair were tracked individually and i tell you it really made a difference.  Aki's hair was the most realistic thing about any of the humans that are portrayed in that movie.  While they are the best that i have seen done they certainly not perfect.  In the past it has always been really quite obvious what was wrong when you see animated humans but now, it is becoming more of a nagging, suspicious feeling.  I think that is great.

Now we come to the more problematic portion of the movie.  The story.  Simply put, i guess the base of the story was rather imaginative and fairly unique.  I haven't really heard a story just like this before.  That is truly saying something.  On the other hand they didn't really put it together very well.  They just didn't produce a story that i could really care about.  And the dialogue seemed rather clunky at times, somehow not matching the characters that we were put before us.

Another nag, was the voices that they chose. I mean, i like how they chose voices that we would recognize, but i didn't always agree with the match.  The doctor in particular gave me problems each time he spoke. It was just wrong.

So we are left with a movie that is fabulous to see but not so fabulous to watch, if you know what i mean.  I have given this movie a half-limpid.

Ever heard of Winnings, Shelberk, or Samdill?  I bet not, for they were the ones that weren't found, that got away.  Well Forrester is no more real than they but at least he has a movie that was made about him.  Consider that for a second.  There is something to be said here, there really is.

All right you caught me, what i just wrote makes no sense at all, but if you sat there thinking about it for a while you have a sense of what a lot of this movie did for me, it gave me things to think about.  I guess that you can tell by they way i incessantly write about these movies and things that i style myself as a writer.  Well this movies is about being a writer, it is about wanting to be a writer and it is about what it is to not be a writer.  Sure there are some other lessons to be learned about being who you are to be who you are.  And loving yourself for who you are.  And i did, indeed like it for this.

In fact i quite loved this movie, i did.  I think it was incredibly  well done, written, directed and acted.  Sean Connery should definitely be up for best actor consideration and Robert Brown XVII (my that's a lot of Robert Browns).  There is so little about this film that brings it down to Good Will Hunting as well.  It's not about a  boy who doesn't want it, who has to learn what he is in order to even think about what he wants.  It has nothing to do with love.  This movie is about a young man how knows what he wants, has no doubts, who is willing to work and dream to get there.

I sat through most of this movie enthralled, even the basketball subplots.  This is a good movie.  This movie can do nothing but make you think.  I have given it a half-turgid .
