June 15, 2002 - 10:30 a.m.
my friend soleena is wonderful.
no, really, it's true.
yesterday i was home sick from work, <cough> <cough>. Did i
mention that all this week the weather in vancouver has been crystal clear,
cloudless and on par with the hottest weeks that we get here?
so on thursday i felt my bug coming on and i mentioned to S
that i would be calling in sick the next day and perhaps treating my ailment
with a trip to the beach and then a matinee opening of the Bourne Identity. and
coming through like a star, thursday evening she asked me if i was still feeling
ill and asked if i would like some company. S's company being pretty much
always stimulating, fun and amusing i jumped at the chance like a squirrel at a
snickers bar (you know without the overtones of imminent confusion). (does
it make me a worse person that another reason i enjoy spending time with S is
that she is quite attractive and it find it refreshing to just be around her so
i can see her smile?)
Friday morning comes around, my bug rears its ugly head and
i make the call to work. then i make the call to S. we make plans
and at 11:30 we head to the beach. Spanish Banks to be exact.
Stopping on the way to pick up some chips and Cheezies™
(there is only one real
Cheezies™)
at the safeway.
The beach was glorious. The tide was out and we got to walk
out on the sandy flats about a km or so, splooshing through the water and sand.
We saw all manner of shellfish and crabs and even a ray. We did not think
that there were any rays off our coast but we did see one, unfortunately it had
been dead for a few days but it was definitely a ray. the sand was warm,
the sun was hot and the sunscreen was useful. also one of the bonuses with
respect to S was the fact that we pretty much had a non-stop running
conversation of some sort throughout the entire experience.
delightful.
After a few hours of this we headed back to civilization. We
might have stayed longer if it hadn't been for our exciting plans to continue on
with our day. The only thing that would have made it better, i think, was
if the tide had come in, say 20 minutes before we left so we could have gone for
a swim and cooled off.
from the beach we headed back to Soleena's house were we proceeded
to wash her car. washing a car, in the hot sun, when you don't have to do
it all that often can actually be a fun thing to do. especially since it
includes a hose and running water. also it included this cute grilling step
where we were given the 3rd degree by a woman from S's building. who are
you? where do you live? are you new? i thought that was that cute red
headed boy's apt (S's SO). who's this? your friend eh?
blah blah blah. nosey busy body's....or something. no, we don't live
here, we just happened to hear on the car washing underground that if you snuck
into the basement of this building you could steal a hose, take it out and wash
your car to your heart's content no questions asked.
From here we took a diversion filled
walk to the cinema where we sat in air conditioned comfort and watched The
Bourne Identity. It was good. Quite good in fact. We both quite
enjoyed it. things i learned on my walk...people who run fax machines for
a living can seem really annoying without doing anything visibly wrong.
that caramel, whipped cream frappaccino can, in fact, leave a horrible coffee
after-taste no matter what your friends think. that fudgecicles, even though
they are now, fat-free, both still taste the same as my childhood remembers and
kill coffee aftertastes and that it can be impossible to find real ice cream on
a cone when you want it.
After the movie we met S's SO for
sushi. We were both famished. this does not surprise me as i had yet
to eat any real food this day and it was now 8 o'clock. what we managed to
do...still....well....appals...shocks...and totally amazes me. the three
of us...arrived, ate, paid and left he shushi place in less than 30 minutes.
this is what i ate...a BC Roll, a Kappa Makki (that's a cucumber roll, sorry), 3
Ebi Nigiri Sushi (that's shrimp sushi), a skewer of beef and bacon, and an order
of chicken Karaage. i was full.
We ALL were full. But happy...oh so very happy.
Then we went back to S's place and
watched Black Hawk Down. Still a very good movie. although not nearly as
totally consuming and engrossing the second time as the first.
at midnight...i came home.
and watched a bunch of bad TV before i went to sleep at about 2.
what.
a.
wonderful
day.
